Kiev - capital of Ukraine, a hero town engaging on river banks Dnepr. Under the assertion of scientists, pioneer settlements of people at-sight present Kiev existed already about 20 thousand years ago. According to a legend three brothers Ky, Cheeks and Horiv and sister of their Lybed became founders of Kiev. The city has received the name by name big brother Kija. In December, 1991 the city of Kiev has been declared by capital of independent Ukraine. Now it represents the largest industrial, political, economic and transport centre of the country, centre of the Ukrainian centres of a science, culture and education, a city with two airports, river port and the railway.
Gold gate, the Sofia cathedral of XI century, the Vydubitsky monastery, Kievo-Pecherskaja of a laurels, set of other temples, and also Klovsky and Mariinsky palaces concern the most famous monuments of culture and art of Kiev.
The City has own distinctive symbolics. Modern official the flag Kiev represents the panel of a squared shape coloured in azure (blue, dark blue) colour. In the central part of a board the main figure of the urban arms - archangel Michael with a sword and a board is seated.
On an extent of history the plotting on a municipal arm repeatedly varied. Modern the coat of arms the cities, accepted in 1995, are borrowed from the coat of arms of times of Catherine II and represent a heraldic board of the traditional French form which basic field is coloured in dark blue colour. A main and unique figure of the coat of arms is the stylised plotting of archangel Michael dressed in the long white clothes, a gold belt and a crimson raincoat. The head of the archangel is topped by a gold nimbus. In the left hand Michael keeps an oval board of white colour with the gold cross represented on him (a main symbol of Christian belief), in left - the gold fiery sword which edge represents a tongue of flame. Archangel Michael falls into to one of the most ancient images represented on princely seales still during the period before the Tatar invasion.
